Donald Trump is increasing his legal fight with E. Jean Carroll, the New York author who accused him of sexual abuse.
Trump has filed a counterclaim against Carroll, alleging that she defamed him by publicly accusing him of rape during a CNN appearance.
While a recent jury concluded that Trump was not liable for rape, they did find him liable for sexual abuse and awarded Carroll $5 million in damages.
Trump’s counterclaim is part of a separate defamation lawsuit filed by Carroll, which is scheduled to go to trial in January. Trump’s lawyers argue that a new window for filing a counterclaim was opened when Carroll amended her complaint.
In the amendment, Carroll changed the references from ‘rape’ to ‘sexual abuse’ and included Trump’s disparaging remarks about her.
Trump’s filing contends that Carroll made false statements with the intent to harm and attack the former president. Carroll’s lawyer has not yet responded to the filing.
The upcoming trial in January will further determine the outcome of this legal battle between Donald Trump and E. Jean Carroll.
