AlphaTauri, the Italian-based F1 team, has put an end to weeks of speculation by announcing their driver lineup for the upcoming 2024 season. The team has decided to maintain continuity and will field Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda as their main drivers. This news comes just in time for the Japanese Grand Prix, Tsunoda’s home race.
Tsunoda expressed his delight with the announcement, stating, “I’m so happy to announce that I will be staying with Scuderia AlphaTauri for the 2024 Formula 1 season. I’m looking forward to continuing to fight and collaborate with the team and Daniel.” The young Japanese driver aims to push his limits, progress as a driver, and is grateful for the ongoing support from Red Bull and Honda.
Ricciardo, who returned to the team earlier this year, is excited to continue the journey with AlphaTauri. Reflecting on their progress and plans for the future, he emphasized, “There is a lot of work to do, but we are heading in the right direction and there is a lot to look forward to. Bring on 2024!”
AlphaTauri’s decision to maintain their driver lineup aligns with the largely unchanged technical regulations for the 2024 season. Team Principal Franz Tost explained, “Next year, the technical regulations remain largely unchanged…[With Yuki’s development] and Daniel’s great race-winning experience, we will have one of the most competitive driver pairings on the grid.”
Despite continued speculation, promising reserve driver Liam Lawson will not secure a full-time seat with AlphaTauri for 2024. However, Tost expressed confidence in Lawson’s potential, stating that as a third driver, he will continue to contribute to the team’s development and surely have a future in Formula 1.
With AlphaTauri’s driver lineup announcement, only one seat remains to be filled for the upcoming season—the second seat at Williams. American driver Logan Sargeant currently occupies that position, but the team has yet to confirm his status for next year.
