Padraig Harrington Takes Commanding Lead at the TimberTech Championship

Irish golf stalwart Padraig Harrington is poised to secure his second title of the year in 2023, as he assumed a one-shot lead at the TimberTech Championship held at The Old Course at Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, Florida.

After a remarkable round on Saturday, Harrington finished with a 5-under 66, bringing his overall score to an impressive 9-under. The seasoned pro showcased his exceptional short game skills, sinking several impressive putts and displaying impeccable chipping form throughout the day.

Facing formidable competition from some of the biggest names in the PGA Tour Champions, Harrington understands that closing out this tournament will be a formidable challenge. “I know I won’t have it easy tomorrow,” Harrington humbly remarked after his remarkable round.

Indeed, the players nipping at his heels include legendary figures on the PGA Tour Champions circuit. Bernhard Langer and David Toms sit just one shot back, closely followed by Ernie Els at 7-under. Langer boasts an impressive record, having one of the highest number of victories in PGA Tour Champions history. Meanwhile, the age-defying 56-year-old Toms cannot be discounted, as he continues to prove his prowess on the course.

During Saturday’s play, Harrington exhibited his signature precision and consistency, carding an immaculate round of five birdies without a single bogey. His scoring surge began with three birdies within his first six holes, expertly maintaining his score with par for the following nine, and finally closing out the round with two more birdies over the last three holes.

Harrington’s impressive resume speaks volumes about his abilities. With three major victories under his belt—the 2007 Open Championship, the 2008 Open Championship, and the 2008 PGA Championship—he has firmly established his legacy. Earlier this year, he secured the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open for the second consecutive time, further solidifying his current form.

As the tournament heads towards its thrilling conclusion, spectators can anticipate an enthralling Sunday at Boca Raton. Harrington will take to the course in the final pairing alongside Langer, teeing off at 7:16 am. With a star-studded leaderboard and the pressure building, the stage is set for a memorable showdown in the final round of the TimberTech Championship.
